As a Parents’ Choice Award winning storyteller, Robbi K's spirit is clearly contagious, and the entire audience is soon singing and clapping along with Turtle’s Shell. Drumming, movement, singing and chanting set the scene for Robbi to unfold this amusing traditional tale of a little turtle who outwits the fierce leopard and is rewarded with a shell. Robbi moves about constantly, appealing to the audience as she acts out the many characters.

The Growing Rock: A Southwest Native American Tale
(Suitable for grades K to 3)

      The Growing Rock book cover

Native Americans believe that everything has a spirit, a kind of life of its own; the sun, the wind, the moon...and even the rocks. So sets the stage for The Growing Rock, a Native American tale that invokes the magic of the desert and its creatures. Children clap, sing and chant with Mamma Bluefeather, who has not yet taught her babies to fly; the Baby Bluebirds, who are trapped on the top of the Growing Rock because of jealous Crow; the Mountain Lion, the Rabbit and the Buzzard who try to help; and finally the Measuring Worm, who is a powerful Medicine Man.

The twist to this production: Robbi K & Friends select 7 -10 children from the audience to act out the story on stage, making every performance once in a lifetime experience. Robbi K and Friends! engage the help of the entire audience to resolve the story and bring the baby birds to safety. Adapted from Native American songs and rhythms, the musical trio adds a groovin' element to the story telling. The chanting audience contributes to the power and poignancy of The Growing Rock.

This program is suggested for grades K-3. Curriculum connections include multi-cultural studies, literature, character education, and drama. The Growing Rock's art forms include music, drama, and storytelling. State standards addressed in the work are ELA and SS. The show runs approximately 40 minutes, and maximum audience size is 250 students.
